The main opposition party, the CPN (UML), has called on the government not to take any action that could adversely affect Nepal’s foreign policy and foreign relations. At the beginning of Wednesday’s meeting of the House of Representatives, UML MP Pradip Gyawali said that the SPP agreement would push the country into geopolitical conflict and called on the government not to adversely affect foreign policy and foreign relations. Gyawali said that no action should be taken to disrupt Nepal’s independent and balanced foreign policy and demanded that the government clarify the matter. He also reminded that after the correspondence in 2015, the draft of the agreement was not processed by the then government without in-depth study. Leader Gyawali also clarified that the Nepal Army should not work under the strategic umbrella of any other country except for the call of the United Nations for the establishment of peace in the world. Similarly, Congress MP Gagan Kumar Thapa said that the Prime Minister should give a clear answer in the House despite so much discussion in the SPP. Stating that it was a matter of what the US wanted, Thapa said that Prime Minister Deuba should say that Nepal would not sign such an agreement. He said that the holes of confusion, fear and apprehension about the Prime Minister’s SPP would be closed by itself. Similarly, RPP Chairman Rajendra Lingden argued that US intervention started increasing after the MCC was passed. He advised the government not to create imbalance in non-aligned foreign policy. Similarly, Linden said that the federal election was approaching and demanded the formation of an independent electoral government to make the election free and fair.
